HEAVY FUEL OIL
- Base Fuel mostly Resid ( 500 to 1000 cSt at 50oC).
- Resid blended with MGO or MDO at terminal or on the bunker barge.
- Blended to a specified viscosity at 50oC or 100oF.
- ISO 8217 specifications specify viscosity at 100oC (closer to operating temperature).
- Extremely important to sample during bunkering for laboratory analysis. New MARPOL Annex VI limits sulphur content at 4.5% worldwide, and 1.5% in Baltic Sea.
- Heavier and dirtier than MARINE GAS OIL
- Some grades may contain minor amounts of residual oil
- Viscosity 2.5 to 14 cSt at 40oC
- May contain traces of metals, water and sediment
- Used in high speed diesels
- Commonly used as a “cutter stock” with HFO to achieve desired viscosity
